Case Study: Computer and Mobile Forensics for an INGO
An international NGO with offices in Africa required digital evidence to be collected from electronic sources including computers and smartphones to support a forensic investigation.
The Challenge
To identify, preserve, collect, analyse and present digital evidence from a variety of electronic sources.
Our Approach
We identified the electronic sources and acquired evidence using forensically sound procedures. Sources included laptops, smartphones, electronic vouchers, a web-based system, MySQL database dump, a mobile app and peripheral devices.
Key Results Achieved
- We uncovered evidence of fraud/collusion by a senior official in the organisation, particularly through email analysis and recovery of deleted files from his work-issued computer.
- We identified control weaknesses in the web-based system used to manage user data related to project being implemented and monitored.
- The NGO mitigated operational and reputation risks by addressing gaps in their core information system based on our recommendations.
